Synopsis
Engineer William Wakefield has a secret, something on which he's been working long hours. His long hours annoy his supervisor Gilroy, who gets William in trouble for supposedly not showing progress on his work related projects - but William shows Gilroy to be a misinformed, vindictive fool, which earns Gilroy's enmity.
Gilroy decides that he needs to find dirt to use against William, and decides to search his condo while William is on Vacation in Las Vegas with his friend Anthony, after he finds no incriminating evidence when he hacks into William's work computer. William's and Anthony's weekend plans are derailed when Anthony accidentally triggers the device William has been working on - a time machine, and the two of them are transported back to England in the year 1588.
It's a dangerous time. The Spanish Armada has been destroyed, but the search for Spanish spies in Elizabeth I's court continues. Walsinham, the Queen's spymaster, has his eye on everything going on at the palace. When William and Anthony arrive, it's obvious that they need to find a place to hide, since the time machine requires 40 hours to recharge before they can return to the present.
Luckily for them, they make the acquaintance of the Queen's dressmaker, Katherine, having arrived in her chambers from the future. Katherine takes a shine to William and agrees to hide the two of them. Over the protests of her brother Percy, she creates a cover story that gets them past the Queen's alert eye, or so it seems.
Both men make it through the 40 hours, but William has fallen for Katherine and she him. The hidden time device is discovered by Katherine's and she accidentally triggers it. William catches her in time and the both of them are brought back to the present - but Anthony is stranded in the past!
In the present, as William and Katherine wait for the machine to recharge again, William keeps her at the condo, not wanting her to see too much of the future. He does, however, take her to an historical Faire, where Katherine's 16th century costume blends in. William has decided that he loves Katherine too much to take her back, but after speaking to his friend and former professor, is convinced that he could possibly change history by removing her from it. He must take her back. The night before they are to depart, they share one night of passion.
Anthony, despite the best efforts of Percy to hide him, has been captured and is awaiting transport to the Tower. When William returns and learns of Anthony's capture, he, with the help of Percy and Katherine, manage to spirit Anthony out of the dungeon, but William and Anthony are pursued by Faraday, Walsingham's lieutenant, and a dead ringer for Gilroy. They escape Faraday, who falls into the river and drowns.
Back in the present, both men soon discover that Gilroy has disappeared. William believes that somehow the past was changed in such a way that Gilroy was never born. Time passes, but William cannot let go of his love for Katherine. On a trip of England, William discovers that Katherine died without having children and makes a decision, joining her in the past, while also preventing the premature death of Faraday and putting history back on track. - and by the looks of an historical painting, William and Katherine's life together was a long and glorious one.
